ISLAND TIME
If the idea of escaping to a World Heritage wilderness where you can totally relax appeals, settle into the creature comforts of Kingfisher Bay Resort on Queensland's Fraser Island. Jane Hodges reports.
Even if you're only escaping for a few days the aim of any great holiday is to forget about work, forget the time, and forget what day it is. One place where you can really get away is Kingfisher Bay Resort on Fraser Island - one of Queensland's World Heritage listed gems and the largest sand island on earth.
Three hours drive or a 40-minute flight from Brisbane lands you in the stress free zone. And the best news is mobile phone reception is patchy so my tip is leave those at home!
The award-winning eco-experience of Kingfisher Bay Resort is simply five star.
Sure you can camp on Fraser but not being an outdoor type the option of test-driving the resort was an infinitely more appealing one! Someone's got to make sure the massage is up to scratch, the food is superb and the spa is just the right temperature. I'm pleased to report the resort is delicious.

A week at Kingfisher Bay is one of the most rejuvenating holidays I've ever had. The birds wake you gently in the morning, the days are spent lazing around the pool or sunning and beachcombing on the resort's private stretch of golden sand.
Or you can canoe up Dundonga Creek at high tide, fish from the jetty, or join a day or half-day safari of the islands beauty spots including the surf beach and the Maheno shipwreck, Eli Creek and rainforests that grow from sand.
There's also the option of whale watching from August to the end of October.
After three days of sleeping in, beach picnics, massages, and swimming it was time to get out there and see the island. A dawn ranger-guided bird watching and nature walk around the resort was followed by a big breakfast in readiness for a 3-hour hike inland along sand tracks through bush and rainforest to Lake McKenzie.
The only thing on your mind when you get there is plunging in! It's an oasis of sand dunes that give way to a chalky white beach encircling soft, fresh water graduating from a lolly aqua to a deep blue.
Take a picnic and spend a few hours swimming, sunbaking and wandering around the shore. If you're not keen on the trek back, the resort will pick you up and deliver you back to the creature comfort zone in time for champers on the jetty as the sun sets.
So don't delay, swap the work garb for the swimmers and sarong, pack up your partner or a group of friends and set the pace at island time.
